When the Greek historian Herodotus visited Egypt, the priests of a temple said that they had proof of existence of their gods. Their proof was that the meals prepared for their gods each morning disappeared the following day. Herodotus had this to say about their "proof":

"I saw no gods. But I saw many rats at the base of the statues."
