Basically, the non-existant second half of the poem is the one which deals with the details of the aliens etc. By going to coleridge, dirk stops it being written, and thus the ghost doesn't take over coleridge, so people are not posessed by the poem etc etc, causing a chain of events leaving the ghost stranded.
