Does "somewhere in the South Pacific" mean he wants to keep his location private, or is it British understatement meaning that he is lost and has no idea of where he is other than he hasn't ran into South America or Australia and has no hope of rescue. It is very touching that DNA lying sun burnt and blistered, surviving only on stale Japanese beer and the carcases of what had been his smaller and weaker travel companions, would use his last strength to send us a seasons greetings.
Oh and merry Xmas and a happy new years, although this new years, the honest to goodness end of the second millennium, foreshadows the end of time.
