Subject: Re: Maggie and Trudie and Grammar ( 21 of 22 )
Posted by Court

I haven't gone through all of the other messages in reply to ths post, but, as I have yet to meet anyone else who's read the books, I feel I am on fairly original ground here.

What I have to say is this: Read The Book of the New Sun, by Gene Wolfe. It's split into four volumes (Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lichtor and Citadel of the Autarch), which have subsequntly been collected into two volumes ("Shadow and Claw," and "Sword and Citadel").

These books are beautifully written; the best books I've read, probably. Gene Wolfe is a master of the English language.

Anyway, the relevance of grammar is this: I am currently re-reading Shadow, and, thanks to my current course of studies in English, I can see how utterly amazing every single sentence of it is. Without his genius use of grammar, sure, the story would still be pretty good, but the books wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable, and I probably would have never made it through all four. In fact, in Wolfe's case, and perhaps your case someday, I don't believe the story could have been pulled off without great grammatical skill.
