Mr. Adams is not just a writer, he's an artist, and as such he is free to paint with a palette of words in any way he chooses (unlike, say, a journalist, who is much more restricted to traditional prose). In his defense, I believe Mr. Adams is always spot-on with grammar, but I also believe that artistic license allows him to deviate from the rules of grammer if the need should arise.
