Subject: Shakespeare and Spelling ( 1 of 3 ) Posted by Krissy In William Shakespeare’s day no standard for spelling existed. If the First Folio is utilized as a guide, Shakespeare often used capital letters, extra letters and unusual punctuation to guide the actor in the preferred reading of an individual line. Extra letters indicated a drawn out syllable. Words lacking in letters encouraged clipped speech. Capital letters in a word gave that word extra emphasis. As an actor I find all of these indications useful and extremely accurate as to the underlying message of the text. I find a similar parallel in the speech used on the Internet. The text is not only meant to convey in a literary manner, but also to convey emotion and inflection specific to the person writing the text.
