I'm a member of AMPAS, and have voted for the Oscars since 1995.
I can't tell you what goes on in the other divisions, but I haven't seen any sort of political campaigning in mine. We do get free tapes of the films and the soundtracks of eligible films. The club is one of the best bargains around.

There are no 'automatic' oscars and some people are nominated time after time and don't win. This year's biggest loser was Sir Ian McKellen, whose amazing performance in GODS AND MONSTERS more than justified the top acting award. That it went to someone who cannot act at all is a gross insult to this fine actor, and the other nominees as well.

With regards to Judi Dench's Oscar for Good Queen Bess' eight minutes-
People sometimes win Oscars for performances they gave in the past. I can highly recommend MRS. BROWN for Judi Dench and Billy Connolly's fine performances. She richly deserved the award LAST year and lost it to Helen Hunt (who did exactly nothing in AS GOOD AS IT GETS, one of the most overrated movies of that year.)

Honorary Oscars are voted on by the Board after being suggested by one or more of their members. This year the Academy chose to honor Elia Kazan, director and squealer. Honorary Oscars are normally awarded to deserving figures who never won them for their films. As one writer pointed out here, Kazan HAS two Oscars, which is two more than Orson Welles ever got for directing.

yes, the Academy is political, but the politics does not extend all the way down the list to the general membership. I'd say it's more in the upper echelon.
