Subject: My own last chance to see ( 1 of 5 )

Living in Florida is an interesting experience. It's wonderful seeing anhingas drying their wings while perching on a limb over the pond behind the house, osprey swooping down to snatch a fish, great white herons walking through the yard. Yet I know I'm an intruder here. All this land used to be part of an ecosysem that has been severely fractured. I remember watching a couple of years ago while, over a period of months, a marsh was drained in order to build a new waste water treatment facility. I got to see quite a lot of displaced wildlide, including a full grown gator trying to get across the street. A comedian I once heard joked that they name housing developments after whatever they bulldozed over to build them. That certainly seems to be the case here. I figure that I better try to enjoy what's left of the real Florida while there is still some left. I'm planning a trip to Crystal River to go snorkeling with the manatees. I wonder how much longer people will have the oppurtunity to do this. I've never seen an adult manatee without propeller scars. It's a wonder such slow moving creatures have made it this far. Florida is basically an enviroment under siege. Anyone who wants to understand the problems facing Florida's enviroment should read some of Carl Hiaasen's novels. They're very funny, a little bit sick, and all too accurate.
