My maternal grandfather was a Donovan from Cork. He was, like many Irish living in England, more Irish than the Irish, if you follow me. On his sixty fifth birthday - the day he retired - he came from work and said "That's it, I've done my bit, I'm going to bed."

He did so, and stayed there till his death seven years later.
