Well, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish was first published in 1984. Since the original Macintosh was barely out then (introduced in January 1984) and quite possibly wasn't even out when the book was written, it's entirely possible he would have bought some sort of Apple II instead.

And beyond that, it doesn't really matter specifically. History does not relate. ;-)
