In the modern version, Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother both get gobbled up by the wolf but the woodcutter comes along, slices the wolf open and saves the two ladies.

In the classic version, neither Red nor Grandma escape the wolf's gut.

The ending was changed because parents thought the original might frighten children. (As if the image of two live human beings emerging from a slit-open wolf is somehow lighthearted.)

The Harry Potter books aren't gruesome, but at least their not mamby-pamby either.
