Well, you could mute the membrane, but would you REALLY want to dismantle the microphone to do it? Possibly damage the microphone? Muting the membrane is unfeasible. Also in my experience, covering the head of the mic just causes more feedback...

It does matter how it's created, because with a guitar you can change the pitch of your feedback. If the way feedback is created wasn't important, Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young would have never had solo careers. :) Now if you start talking about stretching your mic's membrane, to change pitch, yes it should be possible, but again unfeasible.
