"I would agree with you in principle - except that a vote for Ralph Nader is almost certainly a vote taken away from Al Gore and therefore effectively translates into a vote for G W Bush which may not be the result you're looking for, I'm guessing." and this......... "I very much respect a vote for Nader, I'm just apalled at the prospect of Bush. The most heartening aspect of US politics I've come across was hearing some of the shadow conference debates at the time of the Democratic Convention. It was thrilling to hear real arguments about real issues from real people. The big issue of the day - and I think the big issue of our times in America - was election financing. They made the point very clearly that it's useless trying to reform anything else until that is reformed. I have this kind of utopian idea, though, that within a generation the internet will make this vast edifice of top-down government irrelevant and - with any luck - extinct. And I'm not talking about casting your four or five yearly vote on a computer screen instead of a booth, I'm talking about the cumulative effect of all of us being able to micromanage our lives in a responsive environment.
