Somebody should define the etiquette for meeting celebrities.

I'm not putting myself forward (I'm still recovering from getting Arthur Miller's autograph, 8 years ago) but I think in this case a "Hello" would probably have been acceptable (so long as you weren't wearing pale blue socks). Perhaps you might have hazarded a "Love your books" and maybe even a movement in the handshake area.
You should remember that asking for autographs is never cool but can be acceptable in some situations.
A good encounter with a celebrity is one where they say more than you do and don't threaten to call the police.
