Well he just said it wasn't true. The question was asked and you got an answer. Only one of the two men concerned can answer you at all, and he has done. If no one was going to listen, why ask?

Anyway who's to say that saying he said "42" wasn't Chapman's idea of a joke? That'll keep the buggers guessing. Why not? Personally having heard both sides of the... what is this, a controversy? Having heard both sides of the thingy in this thread, though I admire Graham Chapman in lots of profound sorts of ways, I don't believe a word of it.
