I have a lot of influence. I don't have control. If a studio is putting many tens of millions of dollars into a project, guess who has control? This is not meant as a negative comment - it's just a statement of the very straightforward and obvious. The casting will be done by the director, who will certainly consult closely with me. The producer and the studio will also be closely consulted. And of course, the studio has the power to overrule. But it's not a power it's going to use arbitrarily or wantonly. The reason you hire a director is that you trust his artistic judgment, so overruling a director is not something you're going to do unless things are going very badly wrong.
