I don't claim to be any kind of scientist here (and I gave up religion a little over 20 years ago), but I always understood that nothing in the universe is ever created or destroyed - it just simply changes form. Perhaps that's what happens to the so-called consciousness/soul/afterlife/whatever?

Just a thought.
