Dearest Douglas,

I'm having great difficulty composing this message, the magnitude having yet to seep into my consciousness. It never ceases to shock me how the death of someone one has never met can provoke such powerful responses. You made my adolescense bearable, helped restore my faith in humanity and made my dreams appear attainable. It is so easy to descend into sycophancy in these times, but I can't think of a negative word to say about you. Although I don't believe in God, at this moment I sincerely hope I'm wrong as eternity would be a pretty dismal concept without you. Why are people born? Why do they die? Why do they want to spend so much of the intervening time wearing digital watches?

Sadly, we shall never know.
