An excellent point was previously made: you can't break grammatical rules if you don't know them in the first place. Basically, the way I see it, you don't need to write every word technically correct, however an understanding of grammar is exceedingly important. I've encountered writing that contained so much poor grammar that it was frustrating to read. On the other hand, nobody wants their novel to read like a computer programming textbook. The way to find the balance between the two is to acquire the knowledge and decide how much of it you want to use in any given piece.
