Aye. Religion can be disturbing for that reason but I would like to submit a theory to the jury that the disturbing element of this is something in PEOPLE that can be expressed in myriad ways. I know plenty of people who don't believe in god and are just as irrational about a number of other things. Doing away with religion doesn't do away with blind faith or stupidity or general nastiness, it just allows those things to be expressed differently.
I've known both religious and non-religious people who I felt awed and encouraged by, who seemed wise and intelligent. Their faith or lack of faith in god or anything else had nothing to do with it. I have a theory: take away "evil religion" and people will be stupid, rude and ignorant anyway.
